Pet Penguin…
I couldn’t resist writing about this…it moved me to tears…wet, ‘ugly cry’ tears…
I watched March of the Penguins today – I dont care what anyone says, nature documentaries are sick…unbelievably amazing and they make me feel like I wanna be an animal just like them because it looks so cool. They look more choreographed and poised than any ballet company and they dont care about the camera. They’re just there. Doing what they do. As naturally as they do it. No pretending. No make-up. No fake eyelashes. No warm-ups. No rehearsal.
If you want reality TV, watch an animal documentary. Yes, I know its a completely reconstructed representation of a humans point of view, cinematically speaking, but it feels like the real thing, you know?
Anyway, the thing that made me cry and laugh and feel more human happened in one shot where the mother penguins are marching through some slippery ice. One of the female birds slips clumsily, gets up and lets out this big GRUNT. It was the same reaction a human would produce after slipping clumsily. And for that one moment, I totally identified with her. I identified with a bird; a bird that doesn’t fly; that spends most of her life ‘marching’ that lives in temperatures that are too chilling to even write about. I wanted to be the bird next to her saying: “Dont worry, I always slip” or the bitchy bird that would say:”You stupid ice cow”…
I couldn’t help it. I had to write about it.
Have you seen it? Thoughts? Comments?
Btw, its glorious how they look after their young…truly magnificent…
I think I want a pet penguin…
Is that legal?
Love,
Shaz
